Symptoms of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur deficiency in spinach plants

Effect of non-harmonious nutrition on the plants of spinach (Spinacia oleracea) variety Matador was investigated in pot experiment in greenhouse. Sterilised siliceous sand which was deficient for the essential nutrients (N,P,K,S) was used as a substrate in the trial (treatments No, Po, Ko, So). Under the deficiency of above mentioned nutrients the reduction in aboveground and underground plant biomass formation was observed in the following order So Ko Po No. Under the lack of nitrogen the older leaves were getting yellow prematurely and the young ones were light-green coloured. Roots were minimally branched and they started die away still after 45 days since sowing. Absence of phosphorus manifested on the leaves by dark-green colour. These leaves were firm, inflexible and grew under acute angle. Root collars were of red colour. Some leaves had dark green-blue hue which was gradually disappearing in conditions of potassium deficiency, especially in the early stages of plant development. The tips of older leaves were getting yellow and later on that dried out. Deficiency of sulphur was manifested by light-green to pale yellow colour of leaves.
