Effect of substitute tree species on the forest soils

Large areas were deforested as a consequence of the air pollution calamity in the Czech Republic in the last decades. As a part of restoration activities, preparatory species were used, both planted and sown to cover forest soils, to prevent soil erosion and to regenerate forest microclimate, necessary for reintroduction of target, climax species. Set of intended favourable effects was connected with the forest soils: their protection, restoration, deacidification and preparation for afforestation again. Among the species tested, two domestic species were considered of special importance, namely birch (Betula verrucosa) and Rowan tree (Sorbus aucuparia). Presented study documents their effect on the forest soil status on studied localities in the area of Krusne hory Mts.
