Trends in development of horticultural production in the Slovak Republic from the aspect of the sustainable development of landscape

In 1998, there were 5,986 ha intensive fruit plantations in the Slovak Republic and in 2000 this area amounted to 6,346 ha. Fruit consumption is 71 kg per capita per year. By 2005, another 2,000 ha plantations will be planted and reconstruction of 4,450 ha orchards is expected. Costs will vary from 350,000 to 500,000 SKK, depending on fruit varieties. The average consumption of vegetables per capita per year in Slovakia is 106 kg, fresh vegetables covering 80 kg and vegetables processed in different ways and stored 26 kg. The conception of nourishment supposes the total consumption of 125 kg, of which 90 kg of fresh vegetables. In 1998, the average vegetable production was 593,025 tons in an area of 42,157 ha, with the mean yield of 14.07 t/ha. The main objective of the development of vegetable production is to improve productivity and attain a higher average yield per ha, at least 18.6 tons. In Slovakia, there are also 19,000 ha of yielding and 4,500 of not yielding vineyards. Fresh grape consumption makes 5 kg, and wine consumption is 13.7 litres per capita per year. In addition to extending the vineyard area, an increase in grape yields is expected, from current 4.2 tons to 6 tons in 2005
