[The analysis of factors influencing competitiveness of Slovak dairy, meat and mill industry]

The analysis of position of Slovak milk and mill products producers did not confirm the hypothesis, that sales of their products would be worsen at the domestic market. Position of meat products producers became worse at the domestic market. Average share of domestic products ranged from 64% to 100% in the representative file of shops. Businessmen have predominated over mutual business relations between producers and shopkeepers. The analysis of domestic producers ability to be successful at related food production branches gives information, that milk industry is able to be strong at the domestic market, but it has no comparative advantages at the liberalized market. Selected meat industry products were not competitive at the domestic not even foreign markets in spite of positive stimulation through economic policy. Mill industry was competitive at the domestic market and international markets both. Improvement of producers position at the market was mainly caused by: improvement of products quality, increasing inhabitants demand for goods of specific production branch, investment in production, wholesale network entry at the market, fail of other producers from the market, entry of direct foreign investment, specialization of a producer. In view of producers, position decline was caused by: entry of wholesale network, increasing of foreign competition, lack of basic raw material, insufficient investment, new producers entry on the market and also by the fact, that no direct foreign investor passed into their enterprise. To the main economic reasons of lower competitiveness belong: increase of basic raw material prices, under-capacity operation of production, sale price increase (transport, charges to a purchaser etc.), price increase of other inputs, high production costs, low labour productivity
