Development of fluidized bed corn dryer for industry

Objective of this research is to design and test a corn dryer of high moisture by using continuous fluidization technique. Criteria for consideration are drying capacity, energy consumption and quality of corn. Experimental results showed that moisture content was reduced from 40 percent dry-basis to 26 percent dry-basis. Residence time was approximately 4.3 minutes. At drying condition as follows: drying air temperature of 160 deg C; bed thickness of 15 cm; air speed of 2.96 m/s, feed rate of 1,860 kg/h, and fraction of air recycled of 78.2 percent, electrical energy of 16.31 kw/h and diesel fuel consumption of 24 l/h. Primary energy consumption was 1,028 MJ/h which could be divided into electricity in terms of primary electrical 152 MJ/h and heat 876 MJ/h. Moisture was evaporated at 186 kg/h. Specific primary energy consumption was 5.5 MJ/kg-water evap. The cost of drying corn for 12 h/day (90 days/year) was 1.75 baht/kg-water which could be divided into fixed cost 0.38 baht/kg-water and operating cost 1.37 baht/kg-water. A mathematical model was developed to compare its results with the experimental ones. The model was accurate for high moisture level of corn but not acceptable for low moisture level which the simulation result of final moisture content is lower than the experimental result of 2-4.5 percent dry-basis.
