Optimum level of filter cake and bagasse for the elevation of salinity problem in sugarcane soil

Attempt was made to solve the salinity problem in sugarcane soil by using bagasse and filter cake, the organic waste from sugar mill. The experiment was conducted in the circular cement pots at Suphan Buri Field Crop Research Center. Three level of soil salinity were combined with bagasse and filter cake and three rate of their application in 3x2x3 factorial with non-saline soil and saline soil (0.6 percent NaCl) as the two control plots. It was found that bagasse and filter cake were effectively eleviated the salinity problem. Application of bagasse improved growth and development of sugarcane by increased tiller number, height and stalk weight. Using bagasse did not show any deterioration of cane juice quality. The optimum rate of bagasse application was 4 tonnes/rai for over 4 ds/m of soil salinity, while filter cake need to be applied at the higher rate than bagasse 6 tonnes/rai).
