Lead contents in soil and plant depending on the distance from pollution source

Studied in this paper were the effects of two pollution sources, a car battery factory in Sombor and a busy major road Sombor-Novi Sad, Serbia (Yugoslavia), on pseudo total and available Pb in the soil and total Pb in the leaves of wheat, grasses, and plum and their potential contamination. Soil samples were taken from the factory yard and at distances of 50, 100, and 2,000 m from the plant itself as well as from spots 3, 5 and 100 m away from the Sombor-Novi Sad road. Pb content in plants was determined in samples taken 50, 100, 130 and 2,000 m away from the plant. The soil in the factory yard was found to have an extremely high concentration of pseudo-total Pb (6,297.5 mg Pb/kg), while plant life was virtually nonexistent. Pb concentration 3 m away from the road was higher than the maximum allowed concentration. At the other distances, Pb concentration was far below the contamination threshold. No significant difference was found between Pb content in the leaves of various plant species at an equal distance from the pollution source. Also, the Pb concentration in dry plant matter was not higher than what is allowed.
