[Egg production and consumption dependence on purchasing power of population in Yugoslavia and abroad]

The analysis has ben done on egg production and consumption as well as their dependence on changes in gross national product in the period 1985-1998, comparing F.R. Yugoslavia with neighbouring countries, European countries, large egg producers, and the largest producers in the world. In the mentioned period, egg production in Yugoslavia decreased, like in neighbouring countries, and to some extent in some European countries as well, whereas in the countries with largest production in the world it increased, especially in China (at average rate of 16.8%). Egg production per capita in Yugoslavia, compared to the countries in neighbourhood (except Albania), was the lowest (about 172 pc on the average). In Europe, the absolute maximum belongs to the Netherlands with 696 pc per capita, while China, which belongs to the group of countries which are the largest egg producers in the world (329 billions ps on the average), significantly logs behind. Apart from the volume of production, the consumption is also influenced by purchasing power of population, but the expected accordance between the dynamics of GNP and egg production is not established, what does not refer to the poultry meat which is almost completely in accordance with the changes in the purchasing power. That means that the elasticity of production is relatively low. In other countries, too, the dependence of egg consumption on purchasing power has been detected, although it is not always in positive correlation, because the largest GNP per capita does not mean the largest consumption.
