Changes of microbiological activity in soil resulting from the use of heavy machinery

The objective of the present paper was to determine the effect of soil compaction on soil microbial activity. Microorganisms take part in the development and maintenance of soil structure and simultaneously, of soil fertility. Each cultivation operation causes changes of microbiological activity of microorganisms. Microbial activity depended on the microbial species, type of enzyme, profile depth, degree of soil compaction and the date of sampling. Soil compaction resulting from the use of heavy machinery decreases total microbial abundance, the abundance of actinomycetes, fungi, ammonifiers, ureolitic microorganisms and oligonitrophilic bacteria, azotobacter and reduces dehydrogenase, protease and urease activity and it increased the number of denitrifiers.
