Adsorption of five herbicides into finnish soils

Herbicides in soil can be absorbed by physical and chemical bonds into soil particles. Adsorption reduces the risk of leaching and phytotoxity, and retards the degradation. The adsorption coefficient (Kd) represents herbicide partitioning between liquid and solid phases in equilibrium. The Kd values of glyphosate, glufosinate-ammonium, ethofumesate, phenmedipham and metamitron were determined for five different Finnish soils, separately for the tillage layer and for the subsoil. The results of these analyses were connected to the soil properties. Soil organic carbon content affected the adsorption of ethofumesate, phenmedipham and metamitron, but it did not affect the adsorption of glyphosate or glufosinate-ammonium. Glyphosate was absorbed the most and metamitron the least of the five herbicides.
