Locations of disease resistance genes in the sugar beet genome

Improvements in the level of inherent disease resistance in sugar beet are required to combat the losses caused by diseases both at present, and in low-input, sustainable agricultural systems in the future. Beta germplasm can be used as a primary source of novel resistance genes to improve the durability and effectiveness of resistance. However, information on the chromosomal location of resistance genes is needed to assist their efficient exploitation in a breeding programme. We have therefore instigated a project to determine the localisation of resistance genes to fungal and viral, foliar and root pathogens using molecular marker based mapping. Novel sources of resistance in Beta germplasm have been identified and mapping populations developed in the same genetic male-sterile background to ensure that the positions of mapped genes can be compared in different populations. The diseases under investigation are Erysiphe betae, Fusarium culmorum, Polymyxa betae, BMYV, BYV and BNYVV.
