Rhizoctonia resistance in sugar beet. Methodological approach and first results

The breeding of sugar beet with resistance to Rhizoctonia is a medium-range way for controlling the increasing spread of Rhizoctonia root rot. The test for resistance to characterize the material of the breeders or to assess the varieties in the official registration is methodologically difficult. The reliability of variety trials is restricted since the disease cannot be forecasted and appears in form of nests. Already for years, a methodological approach for artificial inoculation of sugar beet with Rhizoctonia solani (Kuehn) exists. With the increasing importance of the breeding of sugar beet with Rhizoctonia resistance, these methods have to be developed. The Institute for Sugar Beet Research is developing and testing a method to identify and quantify resistance to Rhizoctonia root rot in sugar beet. In greenhouse experiments and in field trials young sugar beet plants are inoculated with a defined quantity of mycelium. Later, symptoms and damage caused by the disease are rated and the yield and processing quality of the beet are quantified. The previous results are encouraging. After an inoculation all genotypes exhibit an injury, but the intensity and the shaping of the infestation varied among the different genotypes. The first field trials with artificial inoculation showed a more homogeneous infection compared to trials under natural infection and therefore, a higher evidence for the assessment of a sugar beet variety.
