The market performance of sugar beet is determined by beet yield, sugar content and processing quality (internal quality). By introducing quality related payment systems, the internal quality in particular has increasing importance. The question was how far internal quality changes, depending on certain growing factors and on factors influenced by the farmer. It was investigated in field trials at the Institute for Sugar Beet Research Goettingen, Germany, in 1994 and 1995. In these trials, factors such as site, variety, nitrogen fertilisation, plant density and harvest date were varied. Apart from the parameters measured in routine analysis, further parameters with a negative impact on sugar recovery, such as reducing sugars, betaine and soluble total nitrogen were analysed as characteristics for internal quality. The results generated points of departure in order to produce high quality sugar beet with environmentally friendly growing systems in an economically efficient way.
