After analysing the two papers presented during the 50th anniversary (1982) on sugar beet breeding and the fight against pests and diseases, the author is describing that plant breeding underwent a real cultural revolution under the pressure of the reducing price in agriculture and on the necessity of an environmental protection. He takes stock of huge effects of concentration for the breeding company and on the reasons and the consequences of such concentration. He analyses the different techniques to reach sugar beet improvement and their present limits. He examines the different progresses of sugar beet during those last 20 years. Finally, he presents the different studies made by the Genetics and Breeding study group during this period of time.
