The interaction between herbicides and soil insecticides in sugar beets

An investigation is reported regarding the interaction between the herbicides and soil insecticides most commonly used on sugar beet crops on clayey and medium texture soils. Phytotoxicity damage to emerging sugar beet seedlings has been observed in the past when using some soil insecticides and higher dosages of the less selective herbicides, particularly in looser soils. New soil insecticides such as tefluthrin and fipronyl have recently been introduced for band application during seedling. These insecticides are sometimes distributed in conjunction with new imidacloprid as a seed dressing in order to improve protection against soil insects. They may in the future be introduced in Italy as a seed dressing in conjunction with imidacloprid. With regard to developments in the field of new sugar beet herbicides, triflusulfuron-methyl is now in general post-emergence use 5 years after it was first introduced. Following the reduction in residual herbicide costs, pre-emergence dosages have been gradually increased on many farms. An investigation of the interaction between old and recent herbicides and soil insecticides over the past few years in the light of these changes has shown that a good degree of selectivity towards sugar beet is maintained even in the least favourable soil and climatic conditions and with the highest dosages of herbicides.
