The control of sugarbeet against attacks by soil insects is generally managed by seed treatments with imidacloprid. This product nevertheless shows gaps in efficacy against certain soil pests, such as leatherjackets, wireworms or millepedes, or can be too phytotoxic in some circumstances at the highest dosage. To find solutions for thess flaws it is important to study alternatives, such as lower dosages of imidacloprid, combinations of imidacloprid with tefluthrin, or new compounds like thiamethoxam. The study reported here was realised in IIRB co-operative trials conducted by sugar beet Institutes or other research centres in 14 countries, in 1998, 1999 and 2000 (Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, United Kingdom, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Sweden). In these 3 years, many trials were laid out using in each year, the same seed batches. The results obtained under variable pest pressure and climatic conditions allow reliable conclusions about the possibilities offered by alternatives for imidacloprid in seed pelleting. These results and conclusions are presented in this paper.
