Taxonomy of the cultivated highbush blueberry

Highbush blueberries are very diverse and taxonomically comfusing genetic resource. The genus Vaccinium is very old and estimates of species numbers range from 150 to 450. Most of the species are native to Southeast Asia (40%), to North American (25%), and more than 10% to South and Central American. About 25%, is widely scattered over the world. The sections Cyanococcus, Oxycoccus, Vitis-idaea, Myrtillus and Vaccinium included the species that are cultivated or extensively collected from native stands. Camp's monographs reviewed the systematics of various sections of the genus. More recently, Vander Kloet reinvestigated the systematics of Vaccinium sections Cyanococcus and Oxycoccus. He lumps all crown-forming section Cyanococcus taxa under one heading in Vaccinium corymbosum L.. The authors propose to name cultivated blueberries Vaccinium x covilleanum But.et Pl., to commemorate Dr.Frederick Vernon Coville and apprize his pioneering contributions to blueberry culture and breeding
