This review article summarizes the results of monitoring the pollution of water biocenoses by heavy metals in the Czech Republic. Special attention is given to mercury concentrations in pond sediments, rivers, water reservoirs and fish tissues. The history and results of monitoring heavy metals concentrations in Elbe river organisms is detailed. Comparing the data given in this review with the hygienic standards publicated by the Ministry of Health, it can be stated that fish contamination in ponds is generally within the hygienic limits, while mercury concentration is often exceeded in the case of dam reservoirs what is usually ascribed to "the phenomenon of newly filled reservoirs". Considering the running waters, problematic values were found in Ohre river and its tributary Reslava (in mercury concentration) and mainly in some parts of the Elbe river.
