Infestation of a horse by botfly, specific to roe deer (Hypoderma diana)

Between December 2000 and April 2001 and between December 2001 and April 2002, larvae of Hypoderma diana were found on horses from 11 localities in the Czech Republic. Eight saddle horses of different colours from 1 to 18 years old were affected by 5-25 larvae each. The larvae survived mostly to second instar and then died. The dead larvae could be mechanically removed, some of them were probably resorbed. The wounds healed usually in 2-3 weeks, but in exceptional cases an abscess appeared. Culturing the abscess material determined the presence of Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus in one of the cases. The infestation of horses by H. diana was probably due to the use of pastures in wooden areas extensivelly attended by roe deer as well as horses. Besides this, the warm and sunny weather also contributed to the high occurrence of H. diana in May 2000 and the switching of this specific parasite to an unusual host.
