The core provisions of the nitrates directive concern the designation of vulnerable zones, the setting up of a code or codes of good agricultural practice and action programmes, the monitoring of water quality and the progress achieved and the reporting obligations to the European Commission. Within this contribution the status of the Austrian implementation, the motives behind and the experiences gained are briefly described. The focus is on the motivation for applying an action programme throughout the Austrian territory.
