The aim of this study was to determine the relation between the lean meat content (LMC) in gilts assessed in vivo and their future reproductive performance (litter sizer) and culling percentage. The LMC was determined in 797 Large White gilts using Piglog. The increasing LMC did not influence significantly the litter size, but had a negative effect on the oestrus and conception rate leading thus to a significant increase of the culling rate and economic losses. For this reason, the gilts with LMC above 58 % should not be used as breeding sows.
