2002
Valdmann, M. (Estonian Agricultural Univ., Tartu (Estonia). Faculty of Veterinary Science)
108 cytology smears of otic secretions from 58 dogs with clinical signs of otitis externa were examined during the first clinical examination. Malassezia pachydermatis was found from 37,5 per cent, cerumen from 25 per cent, bacterial cocci from 23,4 per cent and rod bacteria from 14,1 per cent of dogs. Six dogs (10,3 per cent) had mixed infections. Unilateral involvement of clinically affected ears was detected in 18 dogs (31 per cent). The ratio of dogs evaluated cytologically with ceruminous otitis externa, not complicated with Malassezia and bacterial components, made up one quarter of all cases. Further investigation is needed to establish quantitative criteria for minimal numbers Malassezia pachydermatis in correlation with their pathologic effect
