An overview of the oak forest of the town of Rakvere

The approximately 25-hectare oak forest of Rakvere is situated on the fringe of the town, at the southern end of the high drumlin. Since the oak forest is both a wildlife protection object and a recreational area actively used by the townsfolk, its management poses a number of problems. The prevalent tree species is oak, with lime gaining ground along the slopes and in the valleys. Unlike other oak forests in Estonia, the concomitant tree species here are lime and maple. The oaks are low and knotty trees sprouted from stunts. While the average age of the oaks is 200 years, some trees are considerably older. Without human interference, the proportion of the naturally reproducing maple will increase, followed by an increase in the proportion of aspen. Spruce invasion is also possible. The oak forest requires a method of management typically used in park forests. If the oak forest is to be preserved in the future, forest plantations are necessary
