The research performed at the Department of Nature Conservation of the Estonian Forest Institute encompassed a large share of the nature conservation studies conducted in Estonia at the period, which generally had a practical bias. The Department's research laid the foundations of the further development of the national park and other wildlife reserves as well as of the network of protected areas. Studies on species protection resulted in a qualitatively new approach aiming at preserving the populations of protected species by protecting their sites and habitats. The research also included issues related to the biology and ecology of various protected plant and animal species, the specification of spread statistics, the discovery of new species, studies of vegetation using mapping, etc. Detailed and extensive studies were performed on conservation forests situated both on the seacoast and in wildlife reserves, particularly on pine forests. In addition, inventories were made of the existing recreation areas located in forested region, and the possibilities of establishing new recreation areas were investigated. That period also saw extensive studies on and the registration of forest berry stocks. Additionally, elk damage to young pine plantations and measures to prevent it were researched
