Influence of biological control of fungal diseases with Trichoderma spp. on yield and quality of onion

The fungus Trichoderma viride is a biological control organism against a wide range of soil-borne pathogens and has plant growth-promotive capacity. The effect of rhizosphere-competent Trichoderma viride strain T6-RC, isolated at the Department of biochemistry, University of Tartu, and two commercial Trichoderma products, 'Binab-T' from Sweden and 'T-22' from USA, were evaluated in onion (Allium cepa) in 1999 and 2000, in two experiments in Estonia and one in Sweden. Onion sets of red bulb onion were treated with trichoderma. Root colonization, plant growth, onion yield and quality were measured. An additional experiment with Trichoderma viride strain T6-RC was carried out in yellow bulb onion. The results showed that the treatment with the different trichoderma products did not significantly affect the Trichoderma colonization of the roots, the plant length, plant number or total onion yield, compared to untreated plants. However, in one experiment, Trichoderma viride treated onions had a significantly higher proportion of large bulbs. In both years, there was no or little disease incidence in the onions. In one experiment there was, however, a trend towards fewer infections by Peronospora destructor in Trichoderma treated onions
