Determinants of adoption of maize technologies and inorganic fertilizer in southern Ethiopia

The overall objective of this study was to investigate and document adoption level and specifically determine the factors that affect the adoption process of improved maize and to draw implications for research, extension and policy. A logit analysis was run to investigate factors affecting use of improved maize in the study area. The regression coefficients and the model were used to calculate predicated probabilities of adoption of maize technology for change in significant explanatory variables. Probabilities were calculated keeping continues variables constant at their mean levels and the dummy variables at zero. Likely effects of changes in the significant variables were observed using the predicted probabilities. The changes in the probability of adopting improved maize as a result of changes in the farmer getting access to credit, extension information, using chemical fertilizer, attending field days, possessing livestock units above average were significant. The probability that a farmer with average level of schooling and farming experience and other continues variables included in the model would adopt chemical fertilizer were 27%, However, if farmers had had access to credit for maize production, the probability of adopting chemical fertilizer would increase to 49%. the use of improved maize variety would also increase the probability of adoption of chemical fertilizer to 43%.
