This paper includes the response of tef to drought and salinity stresses, photosynthetic response to leaf temperature and light, its storage behariour under sub-zero tempratures and studies made to determine whether tef is a C subscript of 3 or C subscript of 4 species. Variations were reported in tef genotypes in germination, seedling emergence, grain yield and dry matter accumulation under drought stress conditions. Cell membrane damage has been determined to be a promising technique to screen tef for drought resistance. Leaf water potential, leaf relative water content, net photosynthesis and transpiration rate were investigated under water deficit conditions and showed differential responses in tef cultivars. Other studies indicated that excised leaf water loss and leaf canopy temperature are potential drought avoidance selection criteria for drought resistance in tef. Evaluation of tef genotypes for osmotic adjustment also showed variation among genotypes. Examining patterns of variability in tef in response to salinity at germination, early seedling growth and late vegetative stages suggested that sufficient variations exist within tef cultivars to make selections for salt tolerance. The photosynthetic responses of tef to leaf tempeature and light were reported to be similar to that of other C subscript of 4 species.
