The Effect of nitrogen, phosphor and potassium fertilizers to the clump growth and pulp quality of Bambusa bamboos at Turaya log over forest area, South Sulawesi (Indonesia)

Bamboo harvesting with clear cut system at Turaya natural bamboo forest area, South Sulawesi, caused decrease of the clump to produce bamboo shoot and bamboo, with has brought about the decrease of the sustainability of the yield. This situation may be due to the unability of the clump to absorb nutrients from soil which is very compact due to the heavy harvesting annually. Appropriate fertilizing and cutting rotation can be used to increase production of the bamboo clump. Nevertheless, we lack of experience and knowledge about fertilizing technique in bamboo forest. Four years of study on the fertilizing of Bambusa bamboo has been conducted at Turaya log over forest area, South Sulawesi, since 1993. The study showed that: (a) Nitrogen, phosphor, and potassium and their combinations increased weight and number of bamboo in the clump. The highest mean percentage of increasing number of bamboo were found in clump fertilized by combination of nitrogen and phosphor, i.e. 93.43 percent annually. (b) The treatments increased nutrient absorption and highest percentage was found in treatment with nitrogen fertilizer i.e. 1.76 percent. (c) Fertilizing with nitrogen, phosphor, and potassium did not have effect on the length, diameter, and thickness of wall and the diameter of fiber. There was no significant different between the quality of pulp either fertilized or unfertilized. (d) Bamboo harvesting with clear cut systems at 3 meter height above the ground produced large waste product (56.18 percent - 72.7 percent)
