Drying and threshing of soybean straw to support seed supply at farm level during rainy season

In order to support the intensification programmes of soybean, rice and corn as well as to overcome the constraint of soybean drying rainy season, the application of a batch dryer designed by Agrindo, using a hand tractor as energy sources for blower (kerosene burner) had been evaluated. The research activity was conducted in the Mechanization Laboratory of RILET, during the rainy season of 1997/1998, using soybean straw of Mancuria variety (grain moisture content average was 31.43 percent wet basis). Evaluation of drying application was conducted to modify the height of the batch dryer. Optimum blower speed used was 1300 rpm and the temperature (plenum) was 40 deg. C. The dried soybean straw then threshed by using power thresher at 600 rpm. Drying period using batch dryer was 5 hours per day, started from 9.00 a.m. until 2.00 p.m. The results of the research showed that grain moisture content after drying was 13.94 percent wb, drying capacity after modification was 475 kg/5 hours which were 15.91 percent wb, and 2000 kg/5 hours respectively. Drying rate was 3.17 percent wb/hour, which was 2.65 percent wb before, threshing capacity was 300 kg/hour and grain damage was 2.4 percent. The germination of the soybean seed after drying and threshing treatments was 91.22 percent. Overhead cost of grain soybean drying was Rp 125.000,00/ton. In conclusion, the drying and threshing system could help save soybean harvests during the rainy season and could be used for the next season

Dalam upaya mendukung program gema palagung serta mengatasi masalah kekurangan benih kedelai saat musim hujan maka dilakukan evaluasi kinerja alat pengeringan tipe bak (APTB) rancangan Agrindo, dengan menggunakan traktor tangan sebagai penggerek "blower" kompor APTB (energi minyak tanah). Penelitian dilakukan di Laboratorium Mekanisasi dan Rekayasa, Balitkabi, pada musim hujan 1997/1998, dengan menggunakan kedelai brangkasan varietas Mancuria (kadar air biji brangkasan kedelai rata-rata 31,43 persen basis basah (bb). Evaluasi kinerja pengeringan dilakukan modifikasi dengan cara meningkatkan tinggi bak pengering pada APTB. Putaran blower dan suhu plenum optimum yang digunakan masing-masing adalah 1300 rpm dan 40 derajat C. Hasil pengeringan kedelai brangkasan tersebut dirontok dengan mesin perontok kedelai pada putaran silinder 600 rpm. Pengeringan dengan menggunakan bak dilakukan selama 5 jam/hari, dimulai pukul 09.00 WIB sampai 14.00 WIB. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kadar air setelah brangkasan kedelai dikeringkan dengan APTB selama 5 jam adalah 13,94 persen, dengan kapasitas pengeringan 475,47 kg dengan laju pengeringan 3,17 persen bb/jam, sedangkan sebelum modifikasi kadar air 15,91 persen dengan kapasitas 200 kg dan dengan laju pengeringan 2,65 bb/jam. Kapasitas perontokan 300 kg/jam dan kerusakan mekanis biji 2,4 persen, daya tumbuh biji kedelai setelah dikeringkan dan dirontok adalah 91,22 persen. Biaya pengeringan kedelai brangkasan untuk tiap ton biji kedelai mencapai Rp 125.000,00/ton. Kesimpulannya sistem pengeringan yang dimodifikasi dan perontok kedelai dapat membantu menyelamatkan hasil panenan brangkasan kedelai pada musim hujan dan biji kedelai dapat digunakan untuk benih pada musim tanam berikutnya
