Inorganic phosphate solubilizing and cellulose degradation capability of some soil bacterial isolates

The present study was aimed for isolating soil bacteria having high capability of solubilizing inorganic phosphate and cellulose degradation. Isolation was attempted from peat, Vertisol, and Latosol. Isolation and selection were done by using Pikovskaya's agar medium and quantitatively testing using Pikovskaya's liquid medium. Cellulolytic degradability was tested using Han'st medium. All isolates with high P inorganic solubilizing capability were able to degrade cellulose. However, not all isolates with high P inorganic solubilizing capability were also high in their capability to degrade cellulose, except GB111, an isolate from peat soil, which possesed high capability for both characteristics. It was able to solubilize 39.5 ppm P and hydrolize cellulose at 85.27 mg/ml. Statistical analysis indicated a close relationship between both capabilities as shown by a correlation coefficient r = 0.93. Bacterial isolates were generally aerobic, rod shaped, and gram negative
