Potency of antibacterial activity of several spices and medicinal plants on Rafstonia solanacearum from ginger

This research was aimed to evaluate antibacterial activity of 12 essential oils and 10 crude extracts of different spice and medicinal plants on Rafstonia (Pseudomonas solanacearum) bacterial wilt disease of many crops. Essential oils were obtained by steam distillation of plant leaves, flowers, and rhizomes or seeds, while plant extracts by metanol extraction of rhizomes. Antibacterial activity of essential oil was evaluated using filter disc method at concentrations of 1, 10, and 100 percent (v/v)(15 micro l/disc), whereas of plant extracts were evaluated using agar medium method at concentrations of 0, 0.1, and 1.0 percent (v/v). Results showed that all essential oil tested showed antibacterial activity to R. solanacearum. Antibacterial activities of cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), clove (Syzygium aromaticum), and Kaempferia galanga oil were stronger than those of the others and streptomycin. Four extracts tested i.e. Rossenbergia pandurata, Uncaria gambir, Curcuma xanthorrhiza and C. domestica were able to inhibit R. solanacearum growth. This study indicated that several essential oils and plant extracts are potential as botanical insecticides, therefore needs to be studied further
