Effect of pinching of plastic house grown spray-type carnation yield and yield distribution

Two experiments were conducted in Al-Yadudah area, 17 km south west Amman. "White Opale" spray carnation was used. Planting was conducted on March 15, 1995 at 32 plants/M² under plastic house conditions. Three pinching systems (single, single and a half and double pinch) on three dates (2,4 and 6 weeks from planting date), in addition to a no pinch treatment (control) were performed in the first experiment. Four pinching height treatments (at nodes 2, 3 and 4) in addition to a no pinch treatment (control) were used in the second experiment. Different pinching system significantly delayed first flowering compared to the control, with maximum delay in double pinch after six weeks. The highest total number of flowering stems/m² was obtained from a single pinch after 6 weeks; while double pinch after 6 weeks gave the least total number of flowering stems/m². double pinch after 6 weeks significantly reduced average flowering stem length, number of nodes per flowering stem and number of flower buds per flow ring stem. Highest total number of flowering stems/m² in August was obtained by the control and a single pinch after 4 and 6 weeks, while single and a half pinch after 6 weeks and a double pinch after 6 weeks significantly gave the highest total number of flowering stems/m² in December. In the second experiment, a progressive increase in total number of flowering stems/m² was achieved from higher pinching location. Pinching proved to be an important tool in significantly shifting and redistributing the flower production in the first year after planting.
