The effect of increasing mineral nitrogen (N) rates and kind of application on the yield, quality and chemical composition of the potato 'Sante' was investigated on sod-podzolic loamy soil in 2001-2002. The nitrogen fertilizer profit was defined as well. It was found, that the optimal mineral nitrogen rate 120 kg N ha*[-1), used as ammonium nitrate, provided heavy yield 38.3 t ha*[-1) of good food potato tubers. It brought in a good profit - 869.94 Ls ha*[-1) with small expenditure - 30.06 Ls ha*[-1) spent for the purchase and spreading of the fertilizer N. Further increase of the N-fertilizer rates as well as its split application (calcium nitrate top-dressing) was not economically justified. There has been obtained new information in regard to chemical composition of tubers and haulms. This information has been used for calculating plant nutrient off-take.
