Tot nu toe hebben genetisch gemodificeerde gewassen alleen voordeel voor de landbouw. In de toekomst valt te verwachten dat deze gewassen zullen bijdragen tot een verbetering van de voedselkwaliteit en gezondheid. De voedselveiligheid wordt onderzocht door nieuwe en oude gewassen met elkaar te vergelijken en de verschillen toxicologisch en op voedingswaarde te testen
