Production and management of exportable cut foliage

Technologies on the production and management of selected exportable foliage plants such as application of fertilizer, plant spacing, time of pruning, and light requirement were evaluated. Findings showed that Dracaena marganitu (Tricolor), Pleomele reflexa (Song of India), and Murraya paniculata (Kamuning) responded well in the open field. Microsorium punctatatum (Polypodium), Dracaena sanderiana (Gold), and Dracaena godseffiana (Florido Beauty) preferred partial shade condition. A survey of 29 ornamental plant growers in Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Quezon, Cebu, Davao City, Guimaras, Negros Occidental, and Carlota City [Philippines] revealed that most of the farms were planted in combination with non-foliage plants and were mostly small-scale backyard type. The largest field plantation of the identified foliage plants was in Batangas. In both Luzon and the Visayas, the common growing medium used was a 1:1:1 combination of coconut coir dust, garden soil, and rice hull. Complete fertilizer (14-14-14) and urea (46-0-0) were applied directly to those planted in the field, while organic fertilizer, such as chicken or hog manure, was incorporated in the media at planting and applied weekly. Planting distances and fertilizer requirements for selected foliage plants recommended to be grown in open field were presented. Likewise, light and fertilizer requirements for some foliage plants recommended to be grown under partial shade were established
