Potting media for batulinau (Diospyros ferrea Wild. Bach) seedlings
2002
Bautista, E.N. | Garciano, G.B. (Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Tacloban (Philippines))
The growth performance of batulinau seedlings were studied using different potting media to identify or recommend specified medium/media for accelerating growth. The six potting media used as treatments were: sand, garden soil, sand + garden soil (1:1), sawdust, garden soil + sand + rice hull (3:1:1), and sand + sawdust (1:1). Results of the study showed that the different potting media had significant effects on the growth performance, particularly the height of batulinau seedlings. No significant effects were observed on seedlings based on diameter growth, survival percentage, number of leaves developed per plant, soil temperature, and shoot-root ratio. Seedlings grown using sawdust (in its state of decomposition), sand, and 1:1 mixture of sand + sawdust were significantly taller, had slightly bigger diameter, higher survival percentage, and more number of leaves developed per plant. The medium/media should be sterilized prior to bagging or potting the seedlings in order to prevent the seedlings from diseases/infestation due to soil-borne pathogens
