Yield gaps in corn production systems in the Philippines

Different corn yield levels are distinguished in terms of defining factors (varietal properties, solar radiation, and temperature), limiting factors (weather disturbances), restrictive factors (soil properties and access to irrigation) and farm-level restraining factors (market forces, access to fertilizers and postharvest facilities, pest and diseases, and presence of farm to market roads). In the Philippines, significant differences exist between farmers' corn yield and that of a research station's harvest. These variations can be further understood using temporal and spatial yield gap analysis. A methodology based on systems approach to yield gap analysis in corn production system is discussed. Results based on yield simulation models, government and private sector data, and farmer interviews are presented together with a review of existing domestic corn yield loss assessments. Results of this study will be useful in establishing crop performance as a function of genetic, agroclimatic, and socio-economic environments
