Hakkinen, M. (Helsinki Univ. Botanic Garden, P.O. Box 44, Fin-00014 (Finland))
Since the 19th century, the taxonomic identity of Musa rubra has been uncertain to most botanists. It was even regarded as a synonym or a name incorrectly applied to Musa laterita. In this paper, a review of the history and descriptions of M. rubra based on the work of different scientist from 1893 to the present was done to establish its true identity. Samples of M. rubra and M. lateria from three herbaria (Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew; Department of Botany, The National History Museum and Museum National d' Historic Naturelle) were also examined to compare their characteristics. Upon establishment of the taxonomic description of M. rubra, live plant samples of M. rubra and M. lateria were grown at the Botanical Garden of the University of Helsinki in Finland. After their characteristics were compared, M. rubra and M. laterita were identified as two distinct species
