"DLU Pearl Sweet" corn (Zea mays L.) (PBS Cn 93-49) was developed by the Institute of Plant Breeding, University of the Philippines at Los Banos (UPLB) College, Laguna, [Philippines]. It was formally approved for commercial release by the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC) in 1993. This is the first white sweetcorn released by the council. "DLU Pearl Sweet" is a white double mutant endosperm open-pollinated variety which carries the shrunker (sh2) and waxy (wx) genes in combination. This double gene concentration contributed by the supersweetcorn and glutinous corn parents resulted in an excellent eating quality characterized by a supersweet taste with a sticky and tender kernel consistency. The cultivar was developed by crossing sweetcorn (Asukar) and glutinous corn (Los Banos Lagkitan). The first generation was selfed and selection for the desired kernel type was done at F2. Selected lines were further selfed and testcrossed to wx donor. Lines which were homozygous for the desired kernel types, based on testcross, were combined to form the initial population. Yield trials showed that the marketable ear yield of DLU Pearl Sweet is comparable to Los Banos Lagkitan and Asukar, the original parents. Biochemical analysis revealed that DLU Pearl Sweet had higher total free sugar (approximately 35%) content than the sweetcorn parent (approximately 28%). Total reducing sugar was also lower (10%) than the sweetcorn parent (15%). Breeder seeds of "DLU Pearl Sweet" are produced by the Cereals Division, Institute of Plant Breeding, University of the Philippines at Los Banos, College, Laguna.
