Population dynamics of leafminer Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) in onion

The population dynamics of the onion leafminer Liromyza trifolii (Burgess) was studied in insecticide sprayed and unsprayed fields in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija [Philippines] during the 2001 onion season. No significant differences were noted between sprayed and unsprayed plots on the number of adult flies caught in the sticky traps, number of larvae and feeding punctures recorded from dissected onion plants. The level of larval parasitism and the number of predators were lower in the sprayed than in unsprayed plots. This indicates that the insecticide was not effective on the leafminer but detrimental to its natural enemies. No significant difference was noted on yield between sprayed and unsprayed fields. It may be that farmers are applying unnecessary sprays to control leafminer not realizing that it is not killing the pest
