Pagkain para sa masa [food for the people] program for the uplands and war-torn areas of Mindanao [Philippines]

The "pagkain para sa masa" program is a research-cum-production and extension model conceptualized to help in the rehabilitation of the uplands in Mindanao [Philippines] after the onset of El Nino in 1998 as well as in the rehabilitation of war-torn areas specifically the Camp Abubakar areas, Maguindanao and Cotabato provinces. The program provides technical advice through a one-day training utilizing result and process demonstrations and the distribution of seed materials both for cash crops (sweet potato, cassava, taro, vegetables) and grain/field crops (rice and corn) and improved native chicken to start up the application of the technologies learned. Since 1996, a total of 30,073 farmers from the 17 provinces, 10 cities, 102 municipalities and 674 barangays [villages] have benefited from the program. In 2002, a total of 11,404 farmers constituted the program beneficiaries. The program is implemented in partnership with the local government units (provincial, municipal and barangay levels), non-government organizations, public schools, women's clubs, the military, to name a few. Some case examples showed how the program has addressed the food security needs and how it provided immediate income to the upland and war-torn households
