Iron concentration in Philippine rices

Grain iron, as well as zinc and calcium, concentration of rice lines and varieties in the Philippines were determined to identify possible sources of said micronutrients for the breeding of mineral-dense Philippine variety. Two activities were done. First, the iron content of ten rice samples previously identified with high grain iron concentration were analyzed. The test entries were planted in two locations- Batac, Ilocos Norte and Maligaya, Munoz, Nueva Ecija. This was to determine the location effects on the amount of iron in the sample. Meanwhile, 408 lines/varieties were prepared and analyzed using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) for iron, zinc and calcium concentrations. The Philippine rices were then classified into high (H), intermediate (I) and low (L) according to the level of micronutrients. Correlation between grain mineral concentrations was also carried out. From these data, test entries containing high mineral concentrations were selected for further screening processes
