Response of glutinous corn (Zea mays Linn.) to population densities

The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of population densities on the growth and yield of glutinous corn (Zea mays Linn.). Three plant spacings at five population densities were evaluated: 100 cm x 50 cm at 2 plants per hill (T1), 100 cm x 50 cm at 3 plants per hill (T2), 75 cm x 50 cm at 2 plants per hill (T3), 75 cm x 50 cm at 3 plants per hill (T4), 50 cm x 50 cm at 2 plants per hill (T5), and 50 cm x 50 cm at 3 plants per hill (T6). An area of 455 sq. m was used in the study following the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). Results of the study revealed significant differences on percent marketable and non-marketable ears. Both parameters increased with increasing distance of planting. Highly significant differences were also observed on the number of ears per plot and length of ears. On the other hand, no significant differences were observed among plants in terms of plant height, number of days to tasseling, number of days to ear formation, weight of marketable ears, yield per plot and computed yield (t/ha). The highest return on investment (ROI) of 194% was registered on plants spaced 50 cm x 50 cm at 3 plants per hill.
