Binendito, Mundo and Turangkog: three lesser known but promising cooking banana varieties of the Philippines

The Philippines lies within the center of origin and diversity of wild and cultivated Musa species and is blessed with a great wealth of banana germplasm. Collection and introduction work of germplasm resources of banana was initiated by the National Plant Genetic Resources Laboratory of the Institute of Plant Breeding in 1980. It now has in its field genebank a rich assemblage of Philippine banana germplasm composed of 47 dessert, 54 cooking and 4 dual purpose (consumed either fresh or cooked) varieties. These varieties were characterized using the Descriptors List for Banana published by the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI), International Network for the Improvement of Banana and Plantain (INIBAP) and the Centre de Cooperation Internationale en Recherche Agronomique Pour le Development (CIRAD). Over the years, several varieties of banana have been identified as promising based mainly on the eating quality of the fruit, taking into consideration its flavor, sweetness and aroma. This paper presents the qualitative and quantitative plant and fruit characters of three Philippine banana varieties namely Binendito, Mundo and Turangkog. These three cooking varieties have been identified as promising based on fruit eating quality and on initial field observation on their probable resistance to banana bunchy top virus
