Production efficiency of mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) as influenced by various weed management strategies
2001
Naeem, M.T.
The studies pertaining to the effect of weed management strategies on the productivity of mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) were carried out at the research area (A Department of Agronomy, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, during the year 2000, on a sandy clay loam soil. Mungbean variety NM-92 was used as a test crop. The experiment was sown in the month of July using Randomized Complete Block Design with net plot size measured 1.8m x 7m. The treatments studied were weedy check, mechanical weeding twice (20 + 40 DAS), pendimethalin @ 2.51 ha-1 applied as pre- plant incorporated & pre-emergence and Fusillade @ 21 ha-1 applied as post emergence. Herbicides were sprayed with CP-3 Knapsack hand sprayer having a boom of 1.8 meter. Observations on different parameters of mungbean and weeds were recorded by using standard procedures. The results obtained led to the following inferences and conclusions. All the treatments decreased weed population and weed biomass over check. Pre-plant incorporation of pendimenthalin resulted in minimum weed count & dry weed biomass and it was found more effective than pre- emergence spray of pendimenthalin. Pendimenthalin controlled both grasses and broad leaf weeds while Fusillade was effective only against grasses. Number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod and 1000 grain weight of mungbean were increased significantly weed control treatments compared to weedy check. Higher grain yield and harvest index values were obtained with pre-plant incorporation of pendimethalin. Net benefits and marginal rate of returns was highest with preplant incorporation of pendemethalin. Generally, pendimethalin applied pre-plant showed better results by providing an early and effective weed control. Therefore it may be concluded that pre- plant incorporation is an economical and effective method to control weeds in mungbean.
