Immunogenicity of formalin and binary ethylenimine inactivated infectious bursal disease virus in broiler chickens

In the present study infectious bursal disease virus was subjected to inactivation with two different chemicals-Binary ethyleniamine (BEI) and formalin. BEI was used in 0.001 and 0.002M final concentrations in viral suspension, whereas formalin was used in 0.1 and 0.2% final concentrations. Both BEI concentrations inactivated the virus after 36 hours of inactivation, whereas both of the formalin concentrations inactivated the virus after 24 hours of inactivation. These four vaccines were tested for their efficiency to generate humoral immune response in different groups of broiler chickens, along with a group of untreated- control birds. Serum samples were collected from each group on different days post vaccination. Indirect haemagglutination (IHA) test was applied to detect the antibody titres. Antibody titres gradually increased till 20-day post inoculation in all the inoculated groups except control birds. Afterwards there was a decline in antibody titres. Both of the BEI- inactivated vaccines gave higher antibody titres than formalin-inactivated vaccines. On the basis of antibody titres 0.001 and 0.002M BEI treated vaccines were non-significantly different from each other Similarly 0. l and 0.2% formalin treated vaccines were non-significantly different, whereas BEI and formalin treated vaccines differed significantly from each other. BEI inactivated vaccines being almost twice the efficient as formalin inactivated ones.
