Biological control of root-knot nematodes with Trichoderma harzianum Rifai on tomato

A fungus, Trichoderma harzianum was tested against Meloidogyne javanica under a pot experiment. Different methods of application, i.e. application of the fungus grown on wheat grains in two doses (at a rate of 20 and 40 g fungus infested wheat grains) and coating roots with fungus, were tested. The fungus was found quite effective in nematode suppression and stimulating the growth of the tomato plants. Nematode suppression was correlated with the dose of the fungus. The highest increase in nematode suppression and the plant height, shoot growth was recorded with 40 g/pot dose of the fungus. Coating roots with the fungus was found more effective method than fungus application on substrate. Gall formation was highly reduced with this method where only 21.3 galls/plant were recorded as compared to 115 galls/plant in control. However, plant growth was not improved. In vitro study of eggs and females infection of M. javanica revealed that increase in infection was directly correlated with the increase in exposure time to the fungus. Culture filtrate (CF) of the fungus inhibited hatching of the nematode eggs and it was 20% and 80% with 1:1 and 1:100 concentration respectively.
