Effect of different potassium levels and soil texture on growth and nutrient uptake of maize

A pot experiment was conducted to observe the effect of soil texture and potassium levels on root and shoot growth of maize plants. Three soils textures viz. sandy loam, sandy clay loam and clay loam were selected for the study. Pots were filled with air dried, ground, sieved and well mixed soil at a rate of 11 kg pot-1. Four potassium levels, i.e. 0, 50, 100 and 150 ppm were used. Hybrid (cv. Magic) seed of maize was sown during spring of year 2001. Crop was harvested after seven weeks and plant height, root and shoot weight were measured. Roots and shoots were analyzed for N, P and K contents. The result revealed that potassium increased the growth of maize and had synergistic effect on N-uptake. Sandy loam soils were more favorable for root and shoot growth and total nutrient uptake of maize. On the other hand, in fine textured soil the root growth and nutrient uptake was significantly decreased.
