Nutritive value of corn silage as affected by additives

In experiment 1, qualitative characteristics (crude protein, crude fibre, and nitrogen free extract) of doughy green maize silage were studied with and without adding feed additives. The first ensiled maize heap was kept as control and the second ensiled maize heap was treated added urea, molasses and ground lime stone at 1 % each. Crude protein and crude fibre were 5.47 and 2.98% higher while the nitrogen free extract 4.86% was lower in treated diet as compared to control diet. In experiment 2, eight calves of the same age and size were randomly distributed in two groups viz. fed treated and untreated corn silage groups. Control silage was offered to group A and treated diet to group B. Calves in both groups were supplemented with concentrate (cotton seed cake and Wheat bran in 1:1 ratio) allowance at the rate of 1 kg/day/100 kg body weight during the experimental period. On the average group A gain 10.43 units higher body weight than group B (P less than 0.05). Dry matter intake (DMI) was 22 units higher with group A as compared to group B (P less than 0. 05).
