The effect of prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2a) on estrus in Kundhi buffalo

Present study was carried out on 60 randomly selected, postpartum (50 plus-minus 4 days) Kundhi buffaloes divided in to two equal groups. Group A was given no treatment (control) while animals in Group B were treated win) Estrumate (2 ml ) administered intramuscularly. (D-cloprostenol a synthetic analogue of PGF2. ICI). The major objective was to investigate the effects of prostaglandin F2 on estrus and related reproductive indices. The data were collected on induced estrus, intensity of estrus and related signs, mean services period, number of services per conception and conception rate. The first injection of Estrumate induced estrus in 26.6% animals (8 out of 30). Second dose was administered alter 11 days on the remaining 22 buffaloes of which 12 more animals (54.5%) exhibited estrus signs as against a total of 11 animals, which exhibited estrus signs in control group during this period. The signs of induced estrus were more marked and frequent (treatment group) as compared to regular estrus (control) The major signs noted included (treated and control group respectively) swelling of vulva (80 and 65%), mucous secretion (80 and 70%) mounting (50 and 40%) to be mounted (50 and 20%) bellowing (65 and 40%) switching of tail (60 and 20 %) and maturation (60 and 40%). The mean service period in treated buffaloes significantly (P less than 0.05) decreased (64.12 plus-minus 6.26 days) when compared to controls (85.10 plus-minus 9.26 days). The number of service per conception in treated group was 1.25 as against 1.8 in controls. Similarly conception are in treated group was significantly (P less than 0.05) higher (80.0%) when compared to untreated controls (54.5%). The study suggested a pronounced effect of PGF2 on the occurrence of estrus, estrus detection, service period, service per conception and conception rate.
